We’re entering the final three months of 2026, and so it’s time for another quick CEW update.
We may as well start with the bad news, which we already shared in mid-August: our new NEH proposal, which would have more-or-less fully funded the project for the next three years, was not funded. This seems to reflect shifting federal administration priorities and once again leaves us fully reliant on generous private donors to fund the project. We remain hugely grateful to those who continue to fund our work.
On a brighter note, about a month ago we announced a free virtual conference on the significance of the recently published volumes of Whitehead’s Essays and Articles. We are excited to see the new scholarship which these books will enable, and we encourage everyone to submit proposals for conference presentations. See the link above for registration and proposal details.
As for the NEH work, with no new grant starting immediately in 2027, we are pushing submission of the manuscript for the third volume of Harvard Lectures (HL3) to next year. Final editing has been taking us longer than anticipated and could use more time to cook. On the other hand, work on the monograph volume that includes SMW, RM, and S is nearing completion and will still be submitted by the end of the year for publication in 2027. We are currently writing the volume introduction, with most of the other editorial work already completed.
If the Whitehead Research Project is to continue, it will be because of the generosity of private donors. With four volumes published and another thirteen still to go, the Critical Edition will still need at least another decade to complete its work.
The work of searching for, transcribing, and editing archival materials is time-consuming and costly. If you are able to support our work with a donation, it would be much appreciated. Just follow this link.
